A panel, which included Professor Anita Taylor - Director of Drawing Projects UK and the founding Director of the Jerwood Drawing Prize project; Tania Kovats - Artist and Professor of Drawing at Bath Spa University; Deborah Harty - Artist and Researcher; and Tim Knowles - Artist and Curator, looked for drawing in all its possibilities. From the work submitted they selected 36 drawings made in Dorset, of Dorset and about Dorset which span the figurative and the abstract, the physical and the digital. These drawings are featured in a publication entitled ‘Drawing on Dorset’.
A publication celebrating The Chesil Beach in Dorset, its sea Kale, reedbeds, shingle and the moons that pass over her. Radical landscape poet Elisabeth Bletsoe and plein air painter Frances Hatch collaborate to express their response to this thin spit of shingle by exchanging images and words. Frances has shaped them into a slim and elegant volume of poetry and images. Published in June 2017 by Viriditas Press. ISBN 978-0-9562647-1-8

WITH RED EARTH UNDER MY NAILS
I chose to use the funding by Arts Council England and Thelma Hulbert Gallery to develop a response to a poem Jeremy Hooker wrote in 2015. He took as a starting point a specific painting of mine, but his words touched into the fundamentals of my practice. WITH RED EARTH UNDER MY NAILS is the third from The Viriditas Press imprint. Jeremy's poem is included as is my response to his insights- I offer 18 reasons why I like to have earth under my nails...

EARTH MATTERS 1
EARTH MATTERS 1:
Landscape artist Frances Hatch offers an insight into her experience of painting en plein air along the coastline of Dorset and Devon over one winter (2013-14). Frances works on site using materials she finds around her. This collection offers glimpses of her experience through the finished works but also informally and intimately in sketchbooks and photographs taken at the time. 'The first thing I do when I arrive in a place is to grub around for a palette. I feel and test anything that seems a potential mark-maker- I'm never happier than with clay under my finger nails'.
